The DeSoto Camera Club began forming in the Summer of 2004. Genie McGee, the Director of the DeSoto Arts Council, through a newspaper article, put out the word that the DAC was interested in forming a camera club, those interested should meet at a certain location. The first introduction meeting gathered 20 people, throughout the Fall other meetings were held to see if the interest was real. Printed articles and pictures can be found at the Club Scrapbook. January 2005. The DeSoto Camera Club was officially formed. Volunteer club officers were Guyton Nunnally, President; Linda Weimer, Vice President; Debbie Smith, Secretary; Tricia Anderson, Treasurer. During the first year the club participated in 3 photography exhibitions. Several newspaper articles about the club were published. Members entered pictures in the Mid South Fair's photo competition, several members won ribbons. The First Annual Christmas Pot Luck Dinner was held at the Wesson House in Olive Branch. The club had 20 members at year end. January 2006. Elected officers were Guyton Nunnally, President; Patti Lynn Dunn, Vice President; Linda Weimer, Secretary; Tricia Anderson, Treasurer. Late in 2005 the Horn Lake Library asked the club to participate in a Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibition "Between The Fences" to be held in the Spring of 2006, the club replied with over 80 photo prints. Later in 2006 the club supplied photo prints for the Horn Lake and Southaven Libraries Summer Reading Program "Claws, Paws, Snails and Tails, 80 to 100 prints were divided between the 2 libraries. During the year several field trips were held, a class in Basic Photography was started, a "Photo Fair" was held in the Fall. The DeSoto Magazine published a 5 page article with pictures about the club. Members entered pictures in the Mid South Fair's photo competition, again members won ribbons. The Second Annual Christmas Dinner was held at the Wesson House in Olive Branch. The club had 35 members at the end of 2006. January 2007. Elected officers were Guyton Nunnally, President; Melanie Turner, Vice President; Jackie Gaines, Secretary; Tricia Anderson, Treasurer. A web site was unveiled in early 2007. During the year professional photographers Wayne Morgan and Carl Neilson spoke to the club. Several Photo exhibitions were held and the club helped local libraries with their Summer reading programs. A second "Photo Fair" was held. Members again entered the Mid South Fair's photo competition, several members came home with ribbons. The Third Annual Christmas Dinner was held at the Wesson House. The club had 42 members at the end of 2007. January 2008. Elected officers were Guyton Nunnally, President; Helen Williamson, Vice President; Shirley Harris, Secretary; Tricia Anderson, Treasurer. "Bugs" ruled the first part of the 2008 club season, this was the subject for exhibitions at 2 of the local libraries in the Spring. Three professional photographers Barney Sellers, Chuck Lamb and Colin McAuliffe spoke to the club in the early part of the year. Elaine Abadie, Director of the DeSoto Arts Council, asked the club if they would be interested in presenting a photo exhibition in October. The DAC had partnered with the National Endowment for the Arts to present The Big Read, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" in DeSoto County in a month long celebration. The club got totally involved in this project, members traveled up and down the Mississippi River photographing river scences and in October presented "Tom Sawyer's River Today" exhibition at 3 locations in DeSoto County with over 150 prints prints. The showing was a success and the exhibition is on loan to several libraries and the Tunica River Park. During the year members presented slide shows of the their travels and instructional courses were held. Members entered pictures in the last Mid South Fair photo competition, again several members won ribbons. The club had 55 members at the end of 2008.
